Beep, beep, beep. The alarm on a new friends cell phone went off.
‘excuse me” she said as she turned it off and stood silently for a few moments. When she opened her eyes it wasn’t hard to see the quizzical look on my face. “Everyday I take time to remind myself what I’m thankful about. The alarm is my reminder to stop what I’m doing and mentally list everything and start being grateful.”
Shock was one word to describe how I felt, but as what she said hit me. How often do I or any of us stop and take inventory of the important things in our lives?
Stuff happens. Everyday we run into a 100 different things that we can obsess on to bring us down. There are traffic jams, bills to pay, jerks who run their mouths, bosses who just don’t get it… The list is endless. Don’t let that determine your day. It is so easy to get caught up in the little things and let them turn into big issues.
Instead when life gives you something to bring down your day ignore it. It’s okay to have a bad day, but you are the person who determines how your day is going to go. When you day starts turning for the worse stop and take inventory. Remember all the positive in your life. Start small if you need too. Think of your family, your friends. Look for all the things around you. How’s the weather? Did someone smile at you or say hello? Did you see anything of beauty on your way to work?
The more you practice seeing the good in the world the easier it comes.
What have you given thanks for today?I want to thank Samantha for guest posting today. I am adding a couple of nice photos I took the other day to show a little bit of the beauty around us, and something we should be grateful for.
