Artsy Fartsy Tuesday-Jan Mapes

Today’s Artsy Fartsy artist is Jan Mapes. We had the pleasure of meeting Jan at the Western Masters art show in Great Falls this past March. Jan is so multi talented, she creates sculptures and also paints. I can’t do either, so anyone who can do both, and do them both well, is amazing in my book.

Jan’s studio is located in the ranch country of southeastern Colorado, where her husband Jim trains cutting horses. Jan’s artwork flows from living the traditional western lifestyle which pervades the local community. Years of immersion and love for this culture have allowed her to develop a special feel for the land, along with its inhabitants and communicate it through her work.

Whether sculpting cowboys, horses, or wildlife, Jan strives to capture the movement, flow, and emotion of the moment. “I never intend to stop growing in my sensitivity towards nature- always taking time to appreciate life.”
